Department of Early Learning

Leon County Schools offers free developmental screenings for children ages 3–5 to help families understand their child’s early learning strengths and potential areas of need. Screenings are provided at no cost and help determine whether further evaluation or PK ESE services may be needed. 

This service is open to: 

• Children not yet enrolled in LCS 

• Children entering VPK or PK programs 

• Families concerned about developmental, speech, or language skills 

What Screenings Include 

Screenings provide a quick look at your child’s development in areas such as: 

• Speech and Language 
  (including clarity, vocabulary, understanding, and social communication) 

• Early Developmental Skills 
  (including fine motor, early learning concepts, problem-solving, and independent functioning) 

Screenings are conducted by trained early childhood professionals in a child-friendly environment. 

How to Request a Screening 

Families complete a short developmental screening questionnaire to begin the process.

Once the questionnaire is reviewed, the Department of Early Learning will contact the family to schedule a screening appointment. 

What Happens After the Screening? 

After your child completes the screening: 

• You will receive information about your child’s developmental strengths and areas that may require further support. 

• If screening results show a need for additional evaluation, the team will guide you through next steps toward eligibility for PK ESE services. 

There is no cost for screenings or follow-up evaluations. 

Who Benefits from Screening? 

Early screening is helpful if you notice: 

• Difficulty with speech or being understood 

• Delays in language or communication 

• Challenges with following directions 

• Concerns about play skills or early learning concepts 

• Motor delays or clumsiness 

• Behavioral or social challenges 

Screenings allow families to understand whether their child is on track—and to access early support when needed.
